Club opens at McTigue Elementary

Shared-space model to serve 6th, 7th and 8th graders

TOLEDO – Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo opened its sixth site within McTigue Elementary School with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 11.

McTigue Boys & Girls Club, which will serve the sixth, seventh and eighth graders at the school, is the direct result of the success of the Schoenrock Family Club, said Jim Ravas, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo. Since its opening on Hill Avenue in 2021, Schoenrock has continuously operated at near capacity, and the demand for our services in South Toledo is well-established.

The McTigue Club, 5555 Nebraska Ave., is part of a new shared-space model with Toledo Public Schools that allows the Club to bring its programming to students where they are, in a familiar environment and without the need for additional transportation.

“TPS and Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo share a mission of providing better futures for the youth of Toledo,” Ravas said. “With the opening of the McTigue Club and the Ottawa River Club, we are taking a big step in making those bright futures possible.”

Power Hour homework assistance, arts and crafts, athletics and technology are just a few of the programs offered by the Clubs.

The organization also maintains close partnerships with community entities such as Metroparks Toledo, Toledo Alliance for the Performing Arts and Imagination Station, which bring their programming to the Clubs.

“I’m excited to continue our partnership with Toledo Public Schools and to offer our programming free of charge to sixth, seventh and eighth graders at McTigue Elementary Schools,” said Gerri Peters, director of programming for Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo. “One of the goals of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo is to introduce our members to as many new and exciting experiences as we can.”

Dr. Romules Durant, TPS superintendent and Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo trustee, called the Clubs trailblazers in working with schools. Collaborative Clubs began with a location in Sherman Elementary in 2007.

McTigue Elementary also joins Marshall STEMM Academy and East Broadway Elementary as TPS buildings that host a Boys & Girls Club.

“Boys & Girls Clubs have been life-saving and life-changing for many of our youth,” Durant said. “We are going to continue to be innovative, we are going to continue to be creative, but more importantly we are going to continue to build upon our relationships and partnerships to provide better outcomes and stronger outcomes for our youth.”

The McTigue Boys & Girls Club is open from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday to sixth, seventh and eighth graders enrolled at McTigue Elementary.
